BURLEIGH Heads Mowbray Park looks set to become the Gold Coast’s latest surf lifesaving powerhouse after winning a five-club race to sign Currumbin sister act Ava and Aleira Usher.
Regarded by many as the future of the sport, both have been members of Currumbin since the age of four but now join a hoard of Vikings to exit the club since the departure of head coach Michael King.

Ava’s signature has been in particularly high demand after winning 10 medals at the 2019 Queensland state titles, including victories in the Under-14 ironwoman and beach flags.
Usher hasn’t seen a day in the past few weeks where she hasn’t been contacted by club presidents and coaches and can’t even “ride to get an acai bowl” without being stopped by pundits inquiring about her surf sports future.
“It was pretty stressful at the start because I didn’t know where to go or what to do, I just knew I wanted to feel comfortable with my coach and be with my friends and sister,” Usher said.
“It’s been wild but it’s nice knowing there are coaches out there who want the best for me and care about my future.
“I thought I was going to be at Currumbin forever so it is sad to leave.”
After testing the waters with a few clubs, Usher finally settled on Burleigh Heads where she will continue to work with King as well as former ironwoman Kristyl Smith.
Usher hopes to follow in the footsteps of world ironwoman champion Smith and qualify for the Nutri-Grain series as a teenager.
“Kristyl is the perfect coach for me and we gel together very well so I’m very excited to work with her,” Usher said.
“I’d like to think of myself as a younger version of her and I like the feeling of Burleigh Heads!”
