As soon as Corey Fletcher heard that his coach Michael King had been made redundant from the Currumbin surf club, he knew he also had to land wherever King popped up.

The former Nipper from the Copacabana club in NSW came within one spot of qualifying for the Nutri-Grain Ironman Series last summer – a testament to King’s ability to get the best out of Fletcher during their four-year working relationship.

Fletcher, 22, never thought he’d be on the hunt for a new club this summer but believes a fresh start and new faces will push him to thrive once more, albeit under a green, yellow and black cap.

“We heard early on that Kingy was made redundant so looking at the season ahead, I didn’t really know what club I’d be racing for,” he said.

“Kingy has done so much for my career so when I found out last week he’d signed with Burleigh, I went down the next day and said I wanted to join.

“Burleigh already have an established squad and go very well for their size so I’m really excited to start training.

“I always wanted to stick with Kingy, whether he found a new club or not. I wanted to be coached by him but I also didn’t want to leave Currumbin because I love everything about the club.”

Fresh off taking out the 2019-20 Summer of Surf board series, Fletcher hopes to improve his consistency in the ironman when training kicks off on Saturday.

Several other members of the Currumbin squad are expected to join Fletcher at Burleigh Heads.
