HE opted not to compete in the gruelling Coolangatta Gold last month, but another endurance race has Tanyn Lyndon confident he can compete with the best this summer.

The Kurrawa ironman finished 12th last summer but put his best foot forward on Sunday with a second-place finish in round two of the Nutri-Grain series behind clubmate Matt Poole.

While every round now counts for Lyndon who opted not to compete in the gruelling Coolangatta Gold, the ironman believes another race could prove the catalyst for a successful summer.

In September, Lyndon and his partner Allie Britton completed the Redbull defiance race in Cairns, a 150km tandem trek which combines disciplines of running, rafting, mountain biking and kayaking.

“Realistically, it probably helped a little bit, the preparation for that race leading into this,” he said.

“We were both keen on it and went up there and had a crack.

“We probably looked a bit silly on the mountain bikes but we got up there and had fun.

“It’s pretty special to share something like that with my partner as well.”

Even onlookers were taken aback by Lyndon’s fitness levels, one Kurrawa mum exclaiming ‘I didn’t think you were that fit’ shortly after he crossed the line in second place just ahead of Currumbin’s Ben Carberry.

“I tried to put a solid four week block in prior to this round because I knew with the Gold, I didn’t think I’d be able to put the load in with work and training,” Lyndon said.

“I guess that four week block has paid off and I’m feeling fit and ready to go I guess.

“In my head, I set up a race plan to stick to which I did.

“I didn’t really want to go out too hard in the first swim leg which I didn’t.

“Everyone loves to go bull out of the gate at the start but I hung in and didn’t exert too much energy.”

Despite finishing second to Poole, Lyndon said there was no one else he’d rather lose to.

“I was frothing for the bloke,” he said.

“He’s such a great bloke and so good to train with.

“In a few legs I was saying ‘come on Pooly keep it up’ and the same thing, he’d be on a wave coming in and he’d yell out to me ‘come on Tanyn work hard out to the can.”
