IT’S not often that a second place generates more elation than a first but that’s exactly how Currumbin’s Hayden White responded to his runner up placing at the Summer of Surf’s cane toad classic.
Just hours after taking out first place in the open ironman on Saturday, White bet some of his winnings on cane toad racing, whereby the pests are placed into the centre of a circle and the first one to hop out wins.
IRONMAN DOMINATION DELIVERS NUTRI-GRAIN SUCCESS
“It’s always nice to get a win because you train really hard,” White said of his ironman final win.
“I kind of wish they didn’t give me the prize money straight away after the race.”
The 30-year-old, who missed out on qualifying for the Nutri-Grain series this summer, will now be left wondering what if after finishing sixth in the Coolangatta Gold, after a number of series competitors chose not to compete, in addition to his iron win.

“They’re that next level above and I’ve been around long enough to know now that I wasn’t good enough to make it this summer,” he said.
“It’s a bit frustrating.
“I went down to watch on Sunday and I wish I was out there but it gives me that fuel to go out there and do my best next race and try and keep the ball rolling.”
White, a member of the famed Currumbin ‘Steak Club’ featured in Saturday’s Bulletin, also believes he may have unlocked the secret to his Summer of Surf win.
“Jackson Maynard has never actually finished a steak at Steak Club,” he said.
Maynard finished tenth in round two of the Nutri-Grain series at Burleigh, a shadow of White’s classy victory.
Summer of Surf round two will be staged next month at Mermaid Beach.
