Palm Beach Currumbin’s mid-season QAFL report card

“Some sides have got on top of us during different moments of games. The good thing about our side is they know when they are being challenged and can put the foot down.” Palm Beach Currumbin coach Jess Sinclair talks about the unbeaten start to the 2019 QAFL season for the reigning premiers.

AS we reach the halfway mark of the 2019 QAFL season, we chat to the coaches of the Gold Coast teams and run the rule over their performances to deliver the Bulletin’s mid-season report card.

Ladder position: 1st

Results: 8 wins, 0 losses and 2 byes

Rating: A+

“We haven’t really done much wrong but I’m sure we will get challenged sooner or later. It’s a matter of time when it happens. We just have to control what we can control and whatever the opposition throw at us then that will determine how the game will pan out. I have no doubt it will come.”

HIGHLIGHT: Round 1 15.15 (105) to 6.12 (48) win over Broadbeach

“Round 1 would be up there. It was a grand final rematch and the stakes are always high and everyone is keen and eager to do well. To win by more than 50 was great. I had a few nerves prior to the game. It was my first game coaching the team and our pre-season form had been pretty bad. We drew with the (Western) Magpies, got beaten by Surfers Paradise and annihilated by the Gold Coast NEAFL side.

It was a bit of an unknown but to come out and perform the way we did was super. The Surfers game was up there as well. That was tipped to be a 50/50 game so to win by (87) was super as well. Having said that the draw has been kind to us with a lot of home games. We have a lot away now on the back end so it will be a tough run home.”

LOWLIGHT: Round 8 14.8 (92) to 9.12 (66) win over Labrador

“We have been good but we have also been poor in patches. Some sides have got on top of us during different moments of games. The good thing about our side is they know when they are being challenged and can put the foot down. Labrador played some really good footy against us and that was a pretty close one.

WHAT NOW FOR QAFL REP GAME?

GROGAN MEDALLIST SENDS WARNING TO RIVALS

Sides will come and we can’t continue to win by 50 or 60 every week, it just won’t happen. The double bye was a blessing because we had a lot of guys who were sore and hopefully we start getting a few back. It’s been really pleasing so not many lowlights. It is a marathon and we are out in front but there will be some challenges coming.”

STAR:

“I probably can’t separate three of our midfielders in Tom Thynne, Tyler Cornish and Jason Burge. They are three standouts every week and have been pretty dominant.

Tom has been absolutely super and is a very consistent player. I have to give an honourable mention to our backline that has been incredible. We haven’t had a big score kicked against us this year.”

BACKBONE:

“Defender Angus Munro is one who really surprised in the pre-season. I didn’t notice him much but when the season started, the way he has gone about it changed my mind really quickly. He just competes, it’s one thing I love about him.

He hates getting beaten and he sets us up back there with his leadership and voice. He has been a super player for us.”
