QAFL representative coach Andy Lovell reveals what should happen to the game in future

QAFL representative coach has made a big call about the potential future of the clash and what he believes Queensland footy powerbrokers should do with the fixture.

QAFL representative coach Andy Lovell has called on Queensland football powerbrokers to make the clash a curtain raiser to one of the state’s AFL games in 2020.

The 2019 clash, won by the Adelaide Football League on June 8, was played at Aspley’s home ground at Voxson Oval following the club’s NEAFL game against Redland.

Lovell said the event should not only return next year, but be used as a curtain raiser to a Gold Coast Suns or Brisbane Lions home game in order to build it up further.

“As a concept I hope it keeps going because it really was a great day,” Lovell said.

“The players should take the credit for elevating the game and the concept and putting it back on the radar because they really embraced it.

“They were sensational. You would like to think next year it’s bigger and stronger again.

“I’d love to play it as a curtain raiser to one of the AFL games, either the Lions or Suns.

“It would be brilliant because it would put a spotlight on local footy.

“There would be so many people, AFLsupportsers and members, who don’t get a chance to watch much local footy but if they saw it they would be really impressed.

“The representative side and quality of it is great. It brings the best players together.

“If we can keep growing it, who knows what we would have to do with logistics about getting it as a curtain raiser but it would be great for local footy.”

Lovell, a former AFL player who also spent time working as an assistant coach at the Suns, said he would put his hand up to coach the team again.

“I definitely would do it again. I loved it,” Lovell said.

“Coaching that group of players was really rewarding.”
