QAFL representative coach Andy Lovell says the Adelaide Football League’s superior firepower proved the difference in a game that may have also dented the premiership hopes of a Gold Coast club.
The QAFL team was defeated by their South Australian counterparts 15.15 (105) to 12.13 (85) in a closely fought game at Aspley’s Voxson Oval on Saturday.
In a further blow star Surfers Paradise midfielder Jack Yelland suffered a hamstring injury in the last five minutes of the game and could be sidelined for his club in the coming weeks.

“He might have twinged a hammy late in the game which is really disappointing for him,” Lovell said.
“He played quite well too and was a key driver for us. He has been fantastic this season, he is a really good player.
“I’m not sure how he pulled up. If it’s a genuine hammy it might be two to three weeks out but I don’t know the extent of it.”
Yelland has not only been one of the Demons best this year, but one of the league’s most impressive performers since shifting to Queensland after three years with West Coburg in the Essendon District Football League.
The QAFL team also lost centre-half-forward Frazer Eaton (Wilston Grange) in the first contest of the game to a knee injury.
It hurt the QAFL going inside their forward 50m but they managed to be within three points going into the final term.
“In the end they were just a bit more composed, bit cleaner in the wet conditions and they were a bit more dangerous going forward,” Lovell said.
“They had a couple of key forwards who were able to clunk a few marks and kick some goals. “At the other end we didn’t. We lost Frazer Eaton in the first two minutes of the game.
“They are suspecting it might have been ACL but they have to wait and get a medical opinion on it.
“It left us short for tall targets up forward plus a rotation but their effort was outstanding, they were fantastic.
“It was a really good game of footy. The skill level of both sides was really strong and some passages of play were really impressive. We gave ourselves a chance.

“We asked the boys at halftime it felt like we were just using the ball a bit laterally and sideways too much instead of going forward with the footy when we kicked it.
“We wanted them to take some territory with our ball use.
“In the third quarter that’s exactly what they did. It gave us a chance but in that last quarter Adelaide Footy League steadied a bit and kicked couple of quick goals at the start of the last when it started to rain heavily.”
