QAFL match highlights Round 10

PALM Beach Currumbin are yet to taste defeat in the 2019 QAFL season but one big change going into the back-end of the year has coach Jess Sinclair on high alert.

The reigning premiers have won all eight of their games but have played all but two of them at their home ground of Salk Oval.

They are coming off a run of five straight home games but are now staring down a draw that will have them return to Salk Oval just twice in their final eight games, in Round 12 against Sandgate and Round 16 against Mt Gravatt.

Sinclair said it was a litmus test for the team who are in the box seat to win a stunning third straight QAFL flag going into Saturday’s Round 11 game against Morningside at Jack Esplen Oval.

“It is going to be a big test,” Sinclair said.

“You are always a better side when you play at home and the draw was favourable to us early on.

“I hope it hasn’t given us a misconception of where we are at. We know Morningside are hard to beat at their ground so we have our work cut out for us.”

Palm Beach Currumbin lost their first game of the 2018 season in Round 13 against Morningside at the same ground they will play this weekend, with their only other defeat for the season coming in Round 17 against Surfers Paradise.

In a huge boost for the Lions, former AFL forward Jack Anthony will make his return from injury.

Anthony is the leading goalkicker in the league with 32 majors but he hasn’t played since the team’s Round 7 win over the Western Magpies on May 18.

A loss can sometimes release the pressure that has been building on a team that has put together a period of sustained success but Sinclair said the only pressure he cared about was the one his side put on the footy.

“You don’t worry about the wins and losses,” Sinclair said.

“We know we will get challenged and we are coming up against some really good opposition in the next few weeks.

“We have to make sure we can control what we can, keep doing the basics right and make sure our pressure on the footy is good. The rest will take care of itself.”

Meanwhile, Labrador and Surfers Paradise will play for the Col Bourke Cup at Cooke Murphy Oval on Saturday while Broadbeach will play Mt Gravatt at Dittmer Park.
