IN a word, wholehearted probably best characterises the way Nerang have gone about their business on return to the Gold Coast District Rugby Union first grade competition.
It’s a factor that will only be heightened in the Bulls squad as they play in honour of popular prop Navar Herbert, who lost his battle with cancer during the week.
A massive turnout gathered at the Bulls to celebrate Herbert’s life on Friday and a big crowd is forecast for the club’s upcoming old boys’ day next Saturday.
A win over the Bond Pirates that day will go a long way towards shoring up Nerang’s place in finals.
The Bulls’ latest brave showing came last weekend against frontrunners Surfers Paradise, who they continually turned away before finally succumbing to a 27-12 defeat.
Nerang skipper Josh Edmond said post-game that heart will always be on display from his group.
“That’s always how we’re going to play,” the 26-year-old winger said.
“Same as when we’re down by heaps against Colleges, there’s no point where we were going to back off and not try because even if you lose the game, every play you do is still building for the rest of the year.
“Every scrum and lineout that you do, even if you are losing the game, that’s still going to contribute for the rest of the season.”
Edmond believes possession retention is what sets teams like Surfers apart but feels they can still make a dent come finals based on how close they’ve come to higher ranked teams already this year.
“We’re just a bit hit and miss at times. When we’re playing our footy, we roll through teams, we make ground, and it’s just working on finishing them off really,” he said.
“It’s looking good towards the business end, we should still hopefully make the finals and then anything can happen – it’s whoever is best on the day. The rest of the season before it doesn’t count for anything.”
After a competition-wide bye this weekend, other Round 12 games will pit the Eagles against Helensvale and Surfers against Colleges.
