THE Gold Coast rugby union community is in mourning after the passing of popular Nerang prop Navar Herbert.
The young father-of-one had been locked in a battle with a cancerous brain tumour of the sarcoma variety until overnight on Tuesday, sparking a flurry of glowing tributes.
The Bulls had run a massively attended ten-a-side tournament last November to raise funds for the Herbert family.
Navar is the son of Cameron “Bushy” Herbert, who received Nerang’s inaugural Matador Award for service to the club.
Funds are now being raised towards taking Navar home to New Zealand to be buried.
More than $35,000 was donated in the first 17 hours of a GoFundMe page being launched.
Bulls president Heath Claydon said they will look to create a memorial in his honour and expects their old boys’ day on July 6 – which had already been designated in support of the Herbert family – to be a big event.
“The effect will be across the whole club. My understanding is there has probably been between 20 and 30 of the players there at any given time over the last couple of days,” he said.
“It’s going to rock the club a bit but I think it will also steel our resolve.”
Nerang will host Bond Pirates on July 6.
