Surfers Paradise Dolphins skipper Andy Finn heaps praise on flyhalf Dalin Sharrock

Surfers Paradise captain Andy Finn believes Dalin Sharrock’s renewed presence at flyhalf has been invaluable as they set about proving their Round 7 win over Griffith University Colleges was no fluke.

SURFERS Paradise captain Andy Finn believes Dalin Sharrock’s renewed presence at flyhalf has been invaluable as they set about proving their Round 7 win over Griffith University Colleges was no fluke.

Sharrock is a long-time Dolphin but started the year playing rugby league for the Ormeau Shearers.

However, he returned mid-season and has since been a pivotal part of Surfers’ winning streak that was extended to seven games on Saturday with a 27-12 defeat of Nerang.

“He’s the kingpin for me,” Finn said of Sharrock.

WHY EACH GCDRU CLUB SHOULD BE EXCITED

“He leads us around really well. When we give him a base, he plays and we follow him. He’s the general – the 14 other players all have got confidence in that man.

“He’s a quiet little assassin, just does his job. He’s top of my list week in, week out.”

Surfers generally looked the dominant team at Albert Park but were made to work by a resolute Nerang outfit, who kept themselves within eight points until a late try under the posts to Finn.

Surfers have now won their past three games by more than 10 points – a margin they had not achieved once during the opening eight rounds – and Finn revealed they had adopted a more aggressive mindset.

“We need to catch up on some bonus points,” the flanker said.

“We’ve needed to start playing a bit more expansive rugby now, not just defending a lead. So we’re trying to attack a bit more – now and again it does leave us a little bit more vulnerable and days like today we probably should have shut up shop instead of keep going and going and going.”

BOND’S FIVE SHINING LIGHTS IN 2019

After a competition-wide bye next weekend, Surfers will take on defending premiers Colleges, who stayed at the top of the table with a 37-27 win over Gold Coast Eagles.

“It was definitely no fluke,” Finn said of their 19-12 victory against the Knights last month.

“Everyone is fired up for that. We’ve seen the results that Colleges get each week, they’re scoring lots of points, but we know what players they’ve got, we know what moves they’ve got and they’re very skilful lads. We want to be able to match that.”

Helensvale walloped Bond Pirates 79-7.
