Minor premiership on the line as Burleigh and Labrador prepare for Gold Coast women’s hockey battle

THE immediate dreams of Gold Coast hockey heavyweights Burleigh and Labrador will go on the line when the sides meet in a top-of-the-table encounter at Keith Hunt Park on Sunday.

BURLEIGH and Labrador will fight to take a major step towards the minor premiership in Gold Coast women’s division 1 hockey when they meet at Keith Hunt Park on Sunday.

With five rounds to play and both sides locked on 29 points, the result of the 4pm encounter could determine the fate of this season’s minor premiership.

Third-placed Mudgeeraba face Roosters at 4pm.

In men’s division 1, Capri (eighth) will be hoping to close the five-point gap to Casuarina (seventh) when they square off in a bottom-of-the-table clash at 1pm on Sunday.

BULLETIN SPORT’S FAST FIVE

In the game of the round, second-placed Labrador will meet fourth-placed Waratahs at 4pm.

Roosters and Kingscliff will square off at 1pm before the Burleigh-Mudgeeraba meeting at 2.30pm.

Meanwhile, a clash with Brisbane Hockey League leaders Commercial will kickstart a crucial two weeks for Labrador as they battle to remain in the minor premiership race.

LOCAL LEGEND GETTING DOWN TO WORK

Sitting third following an 11-1 thrashing of Valley in Round 13 last weekend, Labrador (28 points) enter Saturday’s 4pm battle with Commercial (34 points) at Keith Hunt Park with their hopes of a top-two finish on the line.

FINAL DEFEAT DRIVING YOUNG GUN

The meeting with the Cobras, who have lost just once this season, will be followed by a Round 15 trip to second-placed Easts (33 points).

Skipper Joe Reardon scored four goals against Valley.
