Former state league star John Costello joins Palm Beach Gold Coast Premier League finals push

HE wasted no time marking his Gold Coast Premier League return but one of the city’s finest football exports knows his work is far from over.

HE wasted no time marking his Gold Coast Premier League return but John Costello knows his work is far from over as Palm Beach hunt the competition’s “big four”.

Back in action for the first time in almost a year, the 34-year-old defender made an immediate impact to seal man-of-the-match honours in the Sharks’ 1-0 win over Murwillumbah on Sunday.

‘WE’VE RUN OUT OF MONEY’, SACKED COACH TOLD

A former state league star with Palm Beach, Brisbane Strikers and Olympic in the 2000s, Costello retired at the end of last season following time at Surfers Paradise, before a call from Sharks president Duncan McKenna sparked a comeback.

CONCEPT ON FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS

With the Sharks (16 points) still within sight of fourth-placed Surfers Paradise (21) with six rounds to play, Costello again shapes as a key figure in tonight’s 8.30pm battle with Burleigh Heads (29) at Duncan McKenna Field.

“Duncan gave me a call a couple of weeks ago and said they were in need of some experience at the back. They’re a really young side and that’s my role, to provide some experience at the back,” the Burleigh junior said.

PLAYERS IN THE FIRING LINE

“I’d had the year off because we’ve got two kids under three at home so it’s a busy home life. Then I got itchy feet because the World Cup was on and the missus was like ‘get yourself fit again’.

“I’m enjoying the role. I think we can probably ruffle a few feathers with the teams that are above us on the table going into the back half of the year.

“We need to take points from the top sides to push our way back in (the top four). We’re going to have to knock off a couple of the top sides.”

VIDEO: FUTURE STARS HIT THE COURT ON THE COAST

Table-topping Gold Coast Knights recorded their 11th win in 13 games this season with a 4-2 triumph over Nerang on Tuesday night.
