CROCS SECURE NEW COACH
COOMERA Hope Island have unveiled former South Brisbane and Redlands fast bowler Josh Henderson as head coach for the 2018-19 Cricket Gold Coast season.
LOCAL LEGEND GETTING DOWN TO WORK
Henderson, who will replace outgoing coach and former Queensland Bull Andrew Robinson, spent 10 years at Souths before a three-season stint at Redlands highlighted by victory in the Queensland Premier Grade grand final in 2015-16.
He has also played in England and coached at junior club Park Ridge.
YOUNG GUNS SET FOR CHAMPS
THIRTEEN Gold Coast and Tweed Border players have been named in Queensland squads for the Australian Under-13 Championships in Hobart from October 4-10.
Hockey Queensland have selected two equal boys’ — Sabres and Cutters — and girls’ teams — Embers and Cinders — for the tournament following the state titles in Bundaberg and Mackay earlier this month.
FINAL DEFEAT DRIVING YOUNG GUN
The Embers squad includes Jessica Frater (Gold Coast), Grace Ella and Maddison Hayes (Tweed Border), with Camryn Mathison (Gold Coast), Lucy Fitzpatrick, Nina Murphy and Kendall Wells (Tweed Border) in the Cinders.
Lennox Hassum is the Gold Coast’s lone representative in the Cutters, while Quintyn Laskey-Vella, William Powell (Gold Coast), Nicholas Catterall, Harley Crossley and Rupert Fahy (Tweed Border) made the cut for the Sabres.

BRONZED AUSSIES STAR IN NZ
GOLD Coast young guns Will Markham and Jordan Watson have helped the Queensland Under-16 Maroon team secure a bronze medal at the Pan Pacific Tournament in New Zealand.
More than 168 teams from as far as the US and South Africa competed in under-14, 16, 18 and 20 age groups.
The Coast’s Jenna Breetzke (under-18 girls), Dylan Nicholson (under-18 boys), Ally Christie, Remy Di Clemente and Maddy Ransley (under-20 girls) also took part.
CUBS CAN LEAD CUP CHARGE
MANAGER Andrew Kyle believes an Australian under-15 squad featuring Coomera Cubs’ Jaime Fox and Ian Lee can improve on the country’s 2016 result at next month’s Under-15 World Cup in Panama.
Australia finished 11th two years ago but Kyle is confident of a better showing at the August 10-19 event.
“These kids can play, they’re getting better and better each year,” Kyle said.
Australia is eighth on the WBSC rankings and will vie for 460 points.
