THE Southport School’s lesser lights have drawn the praise of coach Mike Wallace after stepping up on Saturday to put their side on the brink of a 12-year first.
While not at their best in the 54-24 GPS First XV win away to Gregory Terrace, unbeaten TSS did enough to ensure they will at least share this year’s premiership.
BULLETIN’S GCDRU TEAM OF THE YEAR
After seven-straight triumphs, Wallace’s charges can wrap up their first outright title since 2007 with victory at home to Ipswich Grammar this Saturday, while defeat would open the door for Nudgee College or Brisbane Boys’ College to share the crown.
Wingers Hamish Roberts and Alex Walker, as well as centres Joe Devlin and JoJo Fifita, all found the line against Terrace, with Dion Samuela (two) Marlon Jones and captain Zane Nonggorr also touching down to round out the eight-tries-to-four win.
MASS CHANGES FOR CYCLONES’ REP CLASH
“We have been hit by injuries pretty heavily this year but the guys we have asked to come into the team have been amazing. Guys like (hooker) Harry Vousty, Joe Devlin and Alex Walker, they have stepped into the side and we have just continued on,” Wallace said.
“We were pretty good for the most part (on Saturday). We probably drifted away from our game plan at times and that allowed Gregory Terrace to build pressure on us where maybe we didn’t need to chance our arm.
BULL SHARKS TO LEAD QLD COUNTRY’S NRC CHARGE
“But that’s boys and we have always said to them we want them to show their full array of skills and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s about picking the right moment.”
After facing Ipswich Grammar, TSS have a bye in the final round.
