The best teams continued to stamp their authority on day two of the Australia Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships.

The day’s action was highlighted by some stunning individual efforts.

Check out all the replays below.

A THRILLING ACT RUN

An epic 90m run from ACT fullback Braydan Darmody to score a cracking try against the run of play eclipsed the sensational efforts of his side in their 20-8 triumph over heavyweights NSWCIS.

Darmody scooped up dropped ball on his tryline eight minutes from time and made a beeline down the field, leaving a trail of mud in his wake as NSWCIS speedster Rex Bassingthwaighte offered a great chase.

The try extended the ACT’s lead to 12 points and was the dagger which opened up the team’s account to begin their ASSRL championships campaign in exciting fashion.

Darmody was busy at fullback, the Erindale College youngster ensuring the superb work of his forwards, halves and bench players was rewarded by putting a talented NSWCIS outfit out of reach with the game nearing its end.

ERINDALE EDGE

Of the 20 schoolboys selected in the ACT side, just three players were chosen from schools outside of Erindale College, Wanniassa.

The Erindale connection was at its strongest in the halves, where five-eighth Jamie Cowling and halfback Jonah Anderson did a stellar job organising their side and leading them to a 16-8 halftime lead.

The Erindale pair confronted NSWCIS halves Mitch Woods and Toby Rodwell and did a magnificent job, especially with their short kicking game which allowed the ACT to play much of the first stanza in NSWCIS’ half.

Halfback Anderson was all class, having touches in the ACT’s first two tries scored by his schoolmates Cooper Johnston (right wing) and Harry Hudson (right centre).

He then found Luke Tuialii with a superb right to left pop pass which sent him charging through a gap and over the stripe on the brink of halftime.

MIDDLE FORWARD MAGIC

The ACT forwards brought their A game for this one.

With blokes like Billy Hollands and Byron Cahill offering plenty off the bench, middle forwards Jacob Ma’u-Pohiva and Andrew Muir worked tirelessly alongside No.13 Isaiah Nauer who was excellent on defence.

Nauer was an all or nothing performer on that side of the ball, thwarting the strike of NSWCIS’ forwards with great tackle technique.

In attack, Erindale big bopper Ma’u-Pohiva got through the work of two players with his carries.

PREVIEW

The ASSRL Championships resumes on Monday following an action-packed opening day of clashes which featured no shortage of highlights at Bellingen Park.

One of these was the performance of Queensland Schoolgirls No.13 Amanii Misa in the 18-6 victory over NSW CIS.

Misa, a Souths Logan Magpies Under-17s representative player, is one of a whopping seven Mabel Park State High School girls who have been selected in this year’s side who confront WA to kickoff an action-packed day two of rugby league on Monday.

Misa’s Queensland teammates from Mabel Park are winger Nazlyn Waaka-Rhind, prop powerhouses Armarni-Lea Auvae and Alice Shannon, who both made the Australian Schoolgirls team last year, Danielle Tutakangahau, Harlem Walker and Mariah Brown.

The selection of this Super Seven from Mabel comes as no surprise. Those girls were the pick of the bunch at the State Championships and have led their school team to a 2-0 start in the Schoolgirl Cup competition, which Mabel won last year before going on to be crowned the best schoolgirl team in the nation.

Queensland’s secret weapon, No.19 Mariah Brown, is new to Mabel Park this year having moved from up the range in Toowoomba where she played her juniors for the Highfield Eagles, but will finish her schooling at Mabel who have a womens rugby league program.

This program has also attracted powerful Redcliffe Dolphins prop Armarni-Lea Auvae, who made the Australian Schoolgirls team last year out of Murrumba State Secondary College.

Brown, who despite still being in school, has made her BMD Premiership debut with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

After the schoolgirls take centre stage to begin the days play, NSW CIS will back up after Sunday’s 10-point-triumph with a fixture against the ACT starting at 2:15pm, before an exciting Queensland side will look to bounce back after Sunday’s disappointing finish with the final game of the day against the Combined Affiliated States kicking off at 3:30pm.

Every match of the ASSRL Under-18 National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from July 7-12.
