In the battle of Mackay, a three-try Kaileb Krstic performance paired with outstanding centre Mason Ryan-Ellul powered Mackay SHS to a 34-6 victory against Holy Spirit College.

In the final round of the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday evening, bragging rights for Mackay were up for grabs in a rivalry between state school and college with tempers flaring throughout.

After a cagey start to the contest, Mackay SHS second row Brody Moore laid a strong tackle to force a turnover which prop Stephen Sandow took full advantage of with the opening score just past 10 minutes.

Merely minutes later, Mackay’s smooth passing saw a combination of Moore, Ryan-Ellul and winger Kaileb Krstic seal their second try.

Holy Spirit centre Thomas Deguar laid an excellent try-saving tackle before Ryan Ellul darted through the defensive line to continue the avalanche.

Mackay SHS took a commanding 16-0 lead into halftime.

Holy Spirit Hooker Darcy McFarlane was sensational for his side.

The playmaker made a try-saving tackle in the second half that ultimately cost him the match, leaving the game early after a harsh head knock in the tackle.

Jack Goodale was fierce throughout and secured his side’s first try and conversion of the game.

Mackay SHS centre William Veitch was a juggernaut, powering an unstoppable run early in the second half, bulldozing through half the Holy Spirit team, before Krstic continued his side’s domination with two more tries (three for the match).

Mackay kept a strong defensive line throughout the contest in a balanced team performance, while there were only a handful of Holy Spirit players who consistently nailed their tackles and defended territory.

The victory secures Mackay SHS second spot in Pool B with a 4-2 record after the six matches, while Holy Spirit finish third with a 2-4 record with both their victories coming against Mareeba SHS.

COWBOYS CHALLENGE

In the battle of Mackay, Mackay SHS prevailed 14-6 against Holy Spirit College in the final round of the year 10 Cowboys Challenge on Wednesday afternoon.

It was pristine conditions at Sologinkin Oval, with Holy Spirit getting off to a dream start with a try in the opening minutes.

However, that would be their only score of the game with Mackay SHS kicking into gear and scoring three tries straight to close out the regular season.

Mackay SHS playmakers were in immaculate touch, finding gaps for the big forwards to burst through.

Holy Spirit landed some huge tackles throughout but weren’t able to hit the scoreboard heavily enough when it mattered most.

PREVIEW

Mackay SHS will be looking to close out a strong Aaron Payne Cup preliminary round campaign when they take on Holy Spirit College at Sologinkin Oval on Wednesday.

Cottom was the star of the show against Mareeba, scoring the opening try and producing four assists in a classy display.

The No. 7’s reading of the game and vision have been exceptional throughout the competition, while five-eighth Jake Peters has exhibited similar qualities and skill.

Tough centre Mason Ryan-Ellul was a deadly threat against Mareeba as well, scoring two tries, while AJ Bollinger will be pressing Mackay SHS coach Zach Schill for a starting spot after his two tries off the bench.

The reverse fixture ended 26-12 in Mackay’s favour at the beginning of June and Holy Spirit have since struggled with both results and player numbers.

They were hammered 82-0 thrashing against a loaded St Augustine’s side last week, although Blake Adams fought valiantly in the second row, while captain Caleb Owens also made significant contributions.

It came after they forfeited their match-up against Mareeba SHS in round four.

Lock Caleb Brady has been their only multiple tryscorer (with two tries) in their five games.

With St Augustine’s in an unassailable position at the top of Pool B – and only one team going through – this match will not affect the final standings.

With their stronger points differential – +54 – Mackay SHS should secure second, while Holy Spirit, who have two (forfeit) victories over Mareeba SHS and three losses, will be third.
