He didn’t know it at the time but when Boedie Dwight kicked a penalty from 48m out to win the Queensland Schoolboys Trophy for Xavier Catholic College there was someone above pushing it over the posts.

Dwight’s uncle Gareth had died on Wednesday morning hours before the teenager’s Cbus Super Stadium heroics in the 20-18 win over Columba Catholic College that were captured by KommunityTV.

The family had decided to hold off from sharing the news until after the game.

A league-head himself, Gareth Dwight lived and breathed the sport - making the drive to watch his promising nephew whenever he could.

“It was incredibly special,” (Boedie) Dwight said of finding out his uncle had been watching on the entire time.

It was far from orthodox, coach Tony McQuaid admitting he had tried signalling to take the set of six on Wednesday at Cbus Super Stadium.

“There was a bit of confusion because we had a minute left on the clock,” McQuaid said.

“I was sort of thinking ‘kick it out and go for the try’ because it was still 48 metres out.

“But Boedie stepped up.

“I could hear a few of the boys as they were chasing it start to yell, and thought this could be a show. (The) touchies put up their flags and the rest is history.”

Dwight, one of Queensland’s best emerging talents yet to be signed by an NRL club, described how every ounce of nerve left his body the second he laid hands on the ball and lined up the kick.

“I was very very nervous before I got the ball, thinking about the distance and the atmosphere and what’s on the line,” he said.

“I said ‘I’ll take it’ because I knew I could.

“As soon as I touched the ball, that all disappeared. It was locked in.”

A mere second after leaving his boot the star knew it was good.

“It was the best feeling, I’ve never (felt) that.

“Everyone was on a high, everyone wanted to congratulate everyone.”

McQuaid was understandably full of praise for his backrower, who’s kick secured a 20-18 win over Columba Catholic College. Some would say it was revenge from 12 months prior, when CCC had beaten Xavier on this very stage.

“He’s just one of those guys … a rocks and diamonds kind of player.”

The footage of Dwight’s miracle goal has since made its rounds online, capturing the eyes of many.

“I got heaps of messages from staff and past students and all that,” McQuaid said.

“I knew it was something special (and) something the general public would pick up on.

“It’s something you don’t see everyday.”

PREVIEW

Columba Catholic College will play for back-to-back NRL Schoolboys Trophy titles on Wednesday when the school faces Hervey Bay’s Xavier Catholic College.

The grand final is a replay of last year’s Queensland decider.

The Charters Towers school will be determined to cap off another brilliant year on the football field, which included an undefeated run to the Townsville Blackhawks Schoolboys Trophy.

The NRL Schoolboys Trophy final will be streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV at 4.15pm on Wednesday, September 11 as part of the exclusive coverage of the NRL Schools Cup national finals.

Columba have beaten Gordonvale SHS and Good Shepherd Catholic College on their way to the state final against Xavier Catholic College.

Last year’s Queensland final helped Columba halfback Mathias Santo-Hero score his first NRL contract with the Dolphins and coach Rohan Dixon said it would again provide his students with a chance to impress selectors from around Australia.

“They’re excited, they’ve seen what happened last year,” Dixon said.

“There’s always someone looking, whether it’s in-person, online or in the papers, and this is a good stage to play on.

“It’s mixed in with the national NRL Schoolboys final so there’s going to be people there watching and you never know.”

Columba will be without standout fullback Jeremey Singleton, with the rapid and reliable Chase Guy set to don the No.1 jersey.

Dixon said he had been impressed by the elite fitness displayed by Xavier College’s physically imposing forward pack.

“We’ve seen some footage from when they played at Confro and they did really well. They haven’t changed too much from what they had last year, so they’ll be a real challenge.

“They have a good forward pack, most of those bigger boys have really good motors so we’ve got to be prepared to play for the full 60 minutes of the game.

“It’s exciting for the college. It’s an opportunity to do something (win back-to-back titles) that I don’t think any other school has done in this competition, so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
