Wavell Warriors seniors’ farewell tour was a roaring success on Wednesday night with the school producing a stirring 34-4 win over Redcliffe in what was the last home game for the Year 12 students.

With a passionate crowd cheering them on, Wavell roared to a 28-0 at the halftime break after athletic left wing Kurt Jones had starred with two tries and a try assist.

What a way to see off the Year 12s it was from Wavell, who came out amped up and struck almost every time an opportunity presented itself.

Within the first 20 minutes, winger Jones had assisted on a try scored by Jared Horne with a deft grabber kick back infield, scored a 70m intercept try and repaid the favour by scoring a cracking try on the back of some wonderful ballplaying by lock Horne.

On each side of Jones’ second try, Wavell dazzled with two spectacular tries to go into the break with the win almost ensured.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard early in the second half to make it 34-4 when a dash from dummyhalf by Khan Turnbull led to try, but their night was summed up when right winger Seuifalemua Jordan Seuao was ruled to be in touch when diving over in the right corner.

To their credit, Redcliffe played as if the scores were nil-all all right through to the final buzzer, with middle forwards Cody Starr and Jairus Halahala getting through a mountain of work.

The tireless defence of hooker and captain Amare Wynyard was also a positive for Redcliffe, who were chasing their tails early after Jones had announced himself in his final home game in Wavell colours.

WALTERS CUP

Wavell warmed their engines ahead of next week’s Walters Cup semi-finals by way of a 22-0 win over Redcliffe SHS.

While their defence was telling in holding the Eagles scoreless, it was the seamless positional transition from two of their main players which was key in the side’s final win during the home-and-away season.

For the entire season, excitement machine Cortez Kirkpatrick had played fullback and the crafty headgear-wearing Hayden Madders hooker – but on Wednesday they moved into the five-eighth and halfback positions respectively.

The pair took no time to settle in, playing faultlessly in what was a tremendous all-round team performance.

Wavell wasted no time scoring a try in each corner, before going through the middle to score through their power game.

Leading 14-0 at half time, the clinical Wavell had already put a deposit down on victory, but the Redcliffe SHS boys were not going to throw the towel in.

Some positives for the visitors came when:

+Kyron Arthy made a thumping tackle taking his opponent into touch just shy of the try line

+ Towering edge forward Gus Folau made 10+ metres with each carry surging through the midfield.

But the turning point where Wavell moved into the clear came 23 minutes from fulltime when their slippery halfback Hayden Madders sliced through Redcliffe’s defensive line and burst past the last line defender to score.

This try extended Wavell’s lead to 18 and applied telling scoreboard pressure. Then, with 12 minutes left, Madders burst through two defenders and kicked away to score his second try, which moved Wavell further in front 22-0.

PREVIEW

He scored the game-saving try late on in the 12-12 thriller with Palm Beach Currumbin, but this kid would be the last to rest on his laurels, or get too big for his boots.

Inspiring Wavell SHS school captain and Langer Trophy utility back Keyarn Pene grabbed a beauty in the 58th minute to give his five-eighth, Timahna Tandy, a shot at goal to lock the scores up.

Tandy made no mistake and despite Pene’s late game magic, the quietly spoken right centre was, as he always is, one of the last to leave after cleaning up the sheds.

Described by Wavell SHS head of rugby league Ben Colley as a “very well respected student at our school” Pene sets a high standard for his peers in the classroom and on the rugby field where he can play just about anywhere in the backline.

Despite being a hot-stepping centre for the Wavell Warriors, Pene earlier this year captained the Norths Devils Connell Cup Under-17s from five-eighth.

“He cares deeply about his character and the culture of the group,” said Colley.

“He is the type of kid who will stay back once everyone is off the bus to make sure it is clean.

“He will be the last to leave the game to make sure there is no strapping tape in the sheds.

“He will be one of the first to ask for feedback. You can play him anywhere because you know he knows what the team needs.

“He just takes every challenge head on and plays above his weight.”

The Warriors will confront a Redcliffe SHS outfit that has won their last two games and has secured a spot in this year’s finals.

Even when Keyarn graduates the school later this year, Pene will still be a name you hear about.

Maihi, Keyarn’s younger brother, is in Year 9 at Wavell SHS and has been impressive in the Renouf Shield competition this season.

An Albany Crushers junior, 14-year-old fullback or halfback Maihi made the Met North 14/15 Years Boys team in May and has flair.
