Hat-trick heroes, front rowers doing their best Payne Haas impression, a lot of tries, and a comeback for the ages.

It was only a Wednesday in May, but St Dominic’s and Bass High’s Peter Mulholland Cup clash felt more like a 60 minute Origin clash then a schoolboy game.

Despite the score blowing out towards the end of the match, Bass fought hard for their 38-22 victory.

It felt like the game was taking place at Bass High with a strong vocal crowd in attendance, and winger Paul Johnson gave them something to cheer about off the bat with a double in the early stages of the game.

On the other side of the field, St Dom’s winger Dominic Vella did his best to hit back with his own try in the corner, before their front rower decided to give his best Haas impression.

Pernrith Harold Matts prop Talmage Brown wrong footed a few defenders to score under the post, evening the game up at two tries a piece.

St Dom’s continued to claw their way on top of the match, with left centre Kees Muller running a beautiful short ball for his first try of the year.

Not to be forgotten about Bass winger Johnson added another to his tally with a hat-trick in his first game of the year.

But just like the rest of the game, Dom’s hit back with a show and go from their fullback Hunter Bell, which took the side to a 22-16 lead.

Bell has been a star for Penrith this year, playing a handful of games in their Jersey Flegg side.

Starting to swing the momentum back in their favour, Bass were rewarded with a sin bin to Dom’s second-rower Ryan Golcalves for a professional foul which proved costly for the Kingswood based school.

A missed penalty goal right in front for Dom’s saw Bass hit back with a try to five-eighth Jhevon Lele and a double for centre CJ Udeh.

Bass continued with their strong comeback with a penalty goal to Matthew Barakat, and now four-try hero Johnson scoring on the bell to seal the win.

PREVIEW

St Dominic’s College has become well acquainted with Bass High School in the Peter Mulholland Cup.

The two powerhouses have been drawn together regularly in recent times, and 2025 is no different with the two set to square off to open the season in round one.

They’ll face off from 11.20am on Wednesday at Ringrose Park, live and exclusive on KommunityTV.

It’s a challenge coach Kyle Churchill believes is a good opening test for his troops, particularly given how strongly Bass performed last season.

“We’ve had Bass over the last couple of years and understand the brand of footy they play,” he said.

“They’re a big and powerful squad that we had the wood over, but they’re making good efforts in their program to build and develop.

“They’re no longer that pure, powerful side, but really skilful too. Round one can always be tricky with no footage to rely on so there’s a bit of an unknown.

“But having that experience against them, we know to expect a tough encounter.”

Churchill praised the way the blend of boys has been able to unite as one for a common goal, and he said their school has the talent to be competing with the top teams.

“The group has been coming together really well. They’re a connected group despite the fact the junior reps season doesn’t allow too much field time,’ he said.

“Over the last four weeks we’ve spent time together as a group and building the connection. It’s important in these types of scenarios.

“We have a lot of 16 year olds that will become 17 this year. There’s quite a bit of experience given the younger age. There’s definitely quality players there and they’re hungry to have a go.”

They feature a number of talents in this year’s competition, including a trio of Penrith young guns who Churchill is excited about.

“Hunter Bell (SG Ball) has played a lot of rep football over the years and Talmage Brown (Harold Matthews) will be a force through the middle,” he said.

“They’re both action guys. They can motivate with their words, but more than anything they lead with their actions.

“Jaylin Moran is coming off a good Harold Matthews season and he’ll be a big part of the team.”
