They say save the best for last, and the clash between Westfield Sports High and St Gregory’s College was definitely the best.
Two competition heavyweights went toe-to-toe for 60 minister with St Greg’s coming out 22-8 winners, and throwing themselves into the mix as contenders for the Peter Mulholland Cup.
Similar to top of the table NRL clashes the game started with an arm wrestle between both teams with nothing separating either Greg’s or Westfields starting packs.
It took some individual brilliance from St Greg’s and Wests Magpies halfback Curtis Lakeman, who put in a brilliant pinpoint kick to winger Joshua Vella to open the scoring within the first 10 minuets.
It didn’t take long for Westfields to hit back with their halfback Zain Alameddine taking the line on himself, showing glimpses of a young Benji Marshall.
Closing out the half, Greg’s winger and goal kicker Aidan Richards scored a pearler in the corner to put the side back on top before the break.
The same intensity started the second half with the sides bro exchanging sets, until Westfields powerhouse centre bashed over to end a long range four pointer.
Wests Tigers junior Lakeman was back at it again to bring Greg’s back in front, scoring this time to take the Campbelltown out to a two score lead.
A penalty goal and another try for St Greg’s winger Richard’s sealed the win for the side.
PREVIEW
St Gregory’s College narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in last year’s edition of the Peter Mulholland Cup.
This time around they will be relying on their youth to lead the charge as they enter one of the toughest pools in this year’s competition.
Pool D features Westfields SHS, Hills SHS and Central Coast Sports College, with Greg’s lining up against 2023 premiers Westfields to commence their season.
The round one match will be broadcast exclusively on KommunityTV – one of seven Peter Mulholland Cup fixtures live streamed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We’re looking forward to it,” coach Tom Morrison said.
“We’ve moved from a pool with top seeded teams, which I believe was a much better competition because of that.
“But it’s good to get a crack at those good, top-four teams.
“We try to drive into the boys that to be the best you have to beat the best. It’s not about reputation, it’s about who’s in front of us.
“If we want to be there at the business end of the season, we have to take them down.”
Morrison admits preparations haven’t exactly gone to plan.
“We’ve been okay. Things have been a bit interrupted with injuries and the junior reps season,” he said.
“You miss your players for the first term before they’re back on deck. We’ve been training where we can and our boys rip in and always have a dig.
“That’s all we can ask of them.”
This year will see a host of new faces as the school deals with graduation and an influx of young players coming through their ranks.
St Greg’s have had to deal with the loss of their starting fullback, but Morrison is backing his troops to be able to rise to the challenge.
“We had a large turnover of our year 12s last year,” he said.
“There’s a bit of a chip on the shoulder with the younger players which is good from a coaching perspective. They bring youth and energy.
“What you lose in experience sometimes you can beat that with energy and enthusiasm.
“We lost Reece Josephson who blew his ACL out playing SG Ball. But we’ve had someone step up to fill that role of fullback in Preston Smallwood.
“He’s stepped into that role well.”
