St Dominic’s College has become well acquainted with Bass High School in the Peter Mulholland Cup.
The two powerhouses have been drawn together regularly in recent times, and 2025 is no different with the two set to square off to open the season in round one.
They’ll face off from 11.20am on Wednesday at Ringrose Park, live and exclusive on KommunityTV.
It’s a challenge coach Kyle Churchill believes is a good opening test for his troops, particularly given how strongly Bass performed last season.
“We’ve had Bass over the last couple of years and understand the brand of footy they play,” he said.
“They’re a big and powerful squad that we had the wood over, but they’re making good efforts in their program to build and develop.
“They’re no longer that pure, powerful side, but really skilful too. Round one can always be tricky with no footage to rely on so there’s a bit of an unknown.
“But having that experience against them, we know to expect a tough encounter.”
Churchill praised the way the blend of boys has been able to unite as one for a common goal, and he said their school has the talent to be competing with the top teams.
“The group has been coming together really well. They’re a connected group despite the fact the junior reps season doesn’t allow too much field time,’ he said.
“Over the last four weeks we’ve spent time together as a group and building the connection. It’s important in these types of scenarios.
“We have a lot of 16 year olds that will become 17 this year. There’s quite a bit of experience given the younger age. There’s definitely quality players there and they’re hungry to have a go.”
They feature a number of talents in this year’s competition, including a trio of Penrith young guns who Churchill is excited about.
“Hunter Bell (SG Ball) has played a lot of rep football over the years and Talmage Brown (Harold Matthews) will be a force through the middle,” he said.
“They’re both action guys. They can motivate with their words, but more than anything they lead with their actions.
“Jaylin Moran is coming off a good Harold Matthews season and he’ll be a big part of the team.”
