WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL

After the heartbreak of a grand final loss last year, Redfern All Blacks claimed redemption with a 22-4 defeat of the Bourke Warriors.

Redfern had the best of the early chances including dropping it over the line. Tommi Booth looked the most likely for Bourke in the opening 10 minutes as she was able to get out from dummy half and run.

It was Tiffany Stanley who posted first points in the 16th minute after the centre was able to get on the end of a Aleah Peckham grubber.

It proved the difference through the opening stanza with both sides putting on some big shots.

Redfern flew out of the blocks in the second half and in the blink of an eye they piled on 12 quick points.

Their first try came through some nice work out of dummy half from Bec Riley to catch the defence napping and find Kyla Gordon, who bumped off two defenders to cross.

Then it was Lavinia O’Mealy who took on the line from close range and proved too powerful, putting RAB ahead 12-4 with a little over 10 minutes to play.

O’Mealy set up another and by the time Riley crossed in the shadows of fulltime, RAB had returned to the top of the women’s summit.

“I love leading these young girls. We’ve got a lot of juniors coming through and a good pathway set in Redfern,” O’Mealy told NITV.

“I’m so proud of these girls. They bring a lot of energy to this game and they give me another lease on life.”

JUNIOR GRAND FINALS

UNDER 13 BOYS

La Perouse Panthers are 13s champions after they completed their brilliant weekend with a 26-10 win over Queanbeyan Kanberri Connections.

La Perouse raced out to a 12-0 advantage before the Queanbeyan side was able to get back to within two converted tries midway through the second half.

The southern Sydney side held strong however with a late try helping to seal the result.

UNDER 15 GIRLS

A comprehnensive display has lifted the Newcastle Yowies to the U15s girls title after a 26-4 win over Central West Maliyan.

The Yowies led from start to finish and were able to race in six tries to cap off their week as the dominant team.

Throughout their three games they conceded just one try with teams unable to crack their brick-wall defence.

UNDER 15 BOYS

Mindaribba Warriors were able to get the job done in a hard-fought 16-4 victory over the Narwan Eels.

The Warriors prided themselves on their defence throughout the week and it was on full display as they were able to deny the Eels, who came into the game off the back of a 30-0 win over Tamworth.

Mindaribba started well and was able to keep Narwan at bay.

UNDER 17 GIRLS

Waterloo and Mindaribba played out a golden point epic for the ages, with Cherokee Burnett proving the hero for the Storm.

The forward powered through five defenders and reached out to score a powerful try in extra time to cap a thrilling contest.

While it was Waterloo who struck first, Mindaribba was able to tie the scores up on the stroke of halftime thanks to a lovely sideline conversion from Milla Swain.

It was Tanesa Browning who broke the deadlock midway through the second half after a chip kick from Amirah Dargan took a right-hand turn to beat the defenders, with Browning gaining control in her fingertips and going over the score.

They didn’t have the lead for long, with Dior O’Davis barging her way over from dummy half to level it up at 10-all with three minutes to play, ultimately sending the game to golden point.

UNDER 17 BOYS

La Perouse made it two titles for the day after they were able to deny Bundjalung Baygals 22-0.

The Panthers got off to a blistering start with Bailey Roberts picking off a pass on his own 10m line and racing

Soon after it was Roberts again after some great lead-up work from Lochlin Moses and Dwayne Lyons were able to find the winger out wide close to the line to give them a 10-0 lead at halftime.

It was Roberts and Lyons in the thick of things again in the second half, with Roberts making a break down the wing and finding Lyons on his inside to score and seal the victory, with Lorima Cosgrove scoring soon after to tick the score over even further,
