FOOTBALL Gold Coast bosses will reinvigorate work on plans to bring to life a new headquarters and elite training centre worth up to $9 million in the new year.

The city’s football governing body will ramp up the bid for the precinct that has been on the table for the past five years once they beginning working free from the constraints of COVID.

Gold Coast City Council has put aside a parcel of land at Carrara, situated between Broadbeach-Nerang Road and Lakeside Drive in the Emerald Lakes precinct, for the development.

The proposed build will boast three playing fields with lights, fencing, club house, function rooms and offices.

The hope of Football Gold Coast officials is to have a space where they can be self-sufficient, with the staff currently forced to hire facilities at Nerang and other venues to work.

Council had committed to invest $300,000 in the 2019-20 budget and $3 million in 2020-21.

That time period has expired but FGC hope to submit a development application in the new year and approach GCCC about the funds.

The clubs in FGC’s jurisdiction have approved the use of up to $450,000 from the cash reserve, that includes $50,000 for the development application, for the project.

FGC general manager Damien Bresic said

“We plan for this to be a staged development and as we get funds we will add with the hope that it will take about three to fives years to totally complete, unless we get all funds sooner,” Bresic said.

Bresic said FGC hoped to be able to run player development clinics at the venue with affordable pricing, while also using the fields to host grand finals and professional teams playing in Queensland or wanting a facility for training camps.

“We want the fields in good condition so if teams like Sydney FC or Melbourne Victory come to town, which they have in the past, it could be used for that,” Bresic said.

“Recently Football Queensland organised an NPL (National Premier Leagues) select side to play the Brisbane Roar. They are the sort of games we would like to host.

Bresic also said he would be hesitant to partner with a local club hoping to use the grounds through the regular season in order to avoid favouring any one club.
