Shane Warne SuperCoach column: D’Arcy Short leads charge to continued resurgence

With six players on the double game round, and a Hurricane-flavoured recruitment drive, the charge up the rankings for ‘Club 23 Legends’ will hopefully continue, writes Shane Warne.

There aren’t many more demoralising feelings than watching a ball sail over your head into the stands.

Every bowler experiences it from time to time.

Remaining composed on the follow up delivery becomes vital.

‘Club 23 Legends’ weren’t blasted into bay 13 in the opening round of SuperCoach Big Bash, but we were clipped to the rope.

Fortunately, we bounced back with a cracking delivery in round two.

Led by new recruit and skipper Rashid Khan, I scored 978 points for a round ranking of 4,473 that has my side sitting marginally outside the top ten thousand coaches.

With six of my players on the double game round, and a Hurricane-flavoured recruitment drive, the charge up the rankings will hopefully continue.

In Khan’s absence for the bye, gun allrounder D’Arcy Short has been presented with the captain’s armband.

BILLY STANLAKE TO RILEY MEREDITH

My left field option to bring in Matt Short last week paid massive dividends, so with a similar line of thinking around low ownership I’m recruiting Riley Meredith.

While he hasn’t set the competition alight just yet, the Hurricanes quick appears set for a breakout performance very soon.

With the double game in round three, I’m backing Meredith to be a point of difference purchase to set me apart from the rest of the competition.

Big Billy Stanlake hasn’t disappointed in the opening weeks, but with the Strikers on the bye he’ll drop out of my side to accommodate Meredith.

MATT SHORT TO JOE DENLY

The bye has forced Matt Short out of my team short-term, but I doubt it’s the last time he’ll line up for ‘Club 23 Legends’ this season.

With the Sydney Sixers on the double, Englishman Joe Denly comes into my squad.

Denly has struggled in the opening two matches, but he’s opened the batting and bowling for the Sixers which makes him too difficult to pass up in round three.

With a rare lack of allrounders prominent in the batting order for the Sixers and Hurricanes, Denly is a fairly straight forward selection.

ALEX CAREY TO JOFRA ARCHER

Adelaide Strikers wicket-keeper Alex Carey was a rare disappointment after being brought in last round.

With the Strikers on the bye, and international duty in round seven looming, Carey will be moved on to free up cap space.

This allows me to bring in rapid quick Jofra Archer from the Hurricanes. The West Indian has five wickets in two games so far this season and is exceptional when bowling at the death. Archer is also handy with the bat, so here’s hoping he gets an opportunity with the willow at some point in the next two games.
