JOSH Searl was only six-years-old when he started playing junior football for the Broadbeach Cats.
Now more than 20 years on, the playing life member and two-time club Jim Stubbs Best and Fairest winner has notched up his latest achievement – Broadbeach team of the decade selection.
REVEALED: COMMUNITY FOOTY RETURN DATE AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR CLUB
“It’s a massive honour and I am pretty stoked to be selected as there are some amazing footballers on that team,” the 29-year-old said.
“I’ve played footy with every guy on that team but it’s just a shame we’ll never get the chance to all play together.”
Searl was always destined to play footy.
His dad Tim had always played and Josh was keen to follow in his footsteps which led them to them joining the Cats.
“My first memories are playing at 7am in the morning or on Friday nights when I was five or six,” Searl said.
“I didn’t really know what I was doing and mum and dad said I was more interested in talking to my teammates than chasing the footy.
“The Cats are my second home and there’s probably maybe two weeks a year where I’m not there three or four times a week.”
THE BIGGEST SEASON SHUTDOWN CHALLENGE FOR REIGNING PREMIERS
A junior and NEAFL reserves premiership player for the club, there’s one achievement that still eludes him.
In 2018, Broadbeach qualified for QAFL Grand Final eventually falling 100-66 to Palm Beach Currumbin.
“I don’t really care too much about the other stuff anymore, I just want that senior premiership and then I can retire happy,” Searl said.
“It’s a bit of a blur that day because people build it up so much and try to tell you it’s just another game but it’s not and afterwards we were all hurting despite our reserves winning their grand final before us.
“In 2011 when we won the NEAFL reserves premiership, we played Aspley up in Brisbane and finished third or fourth so people didn’t think we’d make it and then we were down at half time and managed to get up by a few goals.
“That was great but I’d love a senior premiership.”
As a 140-game player and QAFL team of the year selection, Searl has experienced the highs and lows of football – including a handful of painful injuries.
As a junior, Searl snapped his posterior cruciate ligament which led to knee trouble later in life before a dislocated bone in his foot forced him to fly to Melbourne for a special scan to identify the problem.
COAST CLUB OPENS UP ON CHANCE OF PLAYING QAFL IN 2020
“We didn’t know what it was for two or three months so I kept playing on it before we eventually figured it out,” he said.
“I’ve also had hamstring trouble as well in 2018, probably because I didn’t warm up properly one session and then it went on me next session in the warm-up.
“It’s taken me 10 years too long to figure everything out.”
And now for the first time since he was a kid, Searl is being forced to take an extended break from football after the QAFL season was postponed.
COAST CLUB DISCUSS 2020 QAFL PLANS
“I took a bit of a break for the first few weeks because we all knew it was going to be quite a long layoff but everyone is just excited to start training and playing again,” he said.
The Broadbeach Cats team of the decade was selected by life member Brendan Howard, general manager Jason Cotter, secretary Regan Sheehan, life member and president Dale Perkins and football operations manager Matt Littlechild.
