REVEALED: WHAT 2020 QAFL SEASON MIGHT LOOK LIKE

The last time the Demons took to the footy field, they downed raging favourites Palm Beach Currumbin by two points in a thrilling QAFL Grand Final victory.

But the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent postponement of the 2020 season has put any grand flag celebrations on hold.

“It’s a tricky situation,” football operations manager and premiership player Daniel Van De Werken said.

“We’ve won our first flag in 21 years and we can’t even unveil our flag or defend it.

“The whole group is itching to get back on the park and put our best foot forward to defend our flag.”

Like many clubs, the Demons have not been immune from the impacts of the global pandemic.

COAST CLUB OPENS UP ON CHANCE OF PLAYING QAFL IN 2020

The doors to their clubhouse have been shut since March, significantly impacting any incoming revenue but Van De Werken confirmed the club was still eager and ready to participate in whatever revised format AFL Queensland unveiled.

“We want to have our whole junior club, and all our teams on the park, not just one or two, playing some form of footy in 2020,” he said.

“Ultimately we need to provide our club and members with football because we’re a football club.

“We’re ready to go and we’ve put a lot of planning in place and the board is in a good position off-field to put the right things in place to get as many teams on the park.

“It’s (licensed club closure) definitely going to have a big impact on the club as a whole.”

Van De Werken also said it was too early to say whether players might be forced to sacrifice payment to help keep the club above water.

“It’s too early to say but if we have a reduced season, ultimately the payments will be reduced anyway but it will have an impact as it will at all clubs,” he said.

“As soon as we can open the bar and get some sort of revenue in, we’ll be right.

“That’s going to be our biggest lifesaver.”
