A woman’s holiday took a horrific turn after a leisurely day mixing cocktails outside turned excruciatingly painful and left her with serious injuries.
Allana Davison was on a holiday in Mexico when she decided to make margaritas – a cocktail with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice – in the sun.
It wasn’t long before her hands began burning, which she later realised was the result of photodermatitis caused by the reaction her lime-coated skin had to the sun.
Ms Davison shared the painful consequence of her seemingly harmless activity in a TikTok video over the weekend.
Clips from the holiday showed how the backs of both of her hands were covered in painful blistering.
In the first clip, Ms Davison happily sipped on a margarita, but the second showed the top of her right hand coated in bubbling blisters.
The next was of both her hands wrapped in bandages, seemingly after a trip to hospital.
Ms Davison appeared to not let the cocktail incident negate the remainder of her holiday, with her filmed dancing to a song at a house party while wearing the bandages.
After removing her bandages, she showed how a loose layer of skin was beginning to peel off.
Further clips showed patches of discolouration and small sections of peeling as her hands slowly heeled.
Still keen to enjoy her holiday, Ms Davison was shown dashing into the ocean with gloves over her hands, and standing in the pool with her hands elevated out of the water.
She was also pictured on a beach chair in the sun holding a cocktail, but this time with her hands safely covered.
“Don’t squeeze limes in the sun kids,” she wrote across the screen.
Phytophotodermatitis occurs when a plant compound, typically from celery, parsley or lime juice, comes in contact with skin and makes it sensitive to light.
The condition is sometimes referred to as “margarita dermatitis” given it occurs frequently in summer as a result of the lime in margarita cocktails.
