A Gold Coast cyclist hit by a car while riding his bike in Carrara has died in hospital overnight, several days after the tragic crash.

64-year-old David Wheeler sustained critical injuries to his head, chest and legs when he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee near Nielsens and Nerang Broadbeach roads about 6am on Wednesday.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, the Clear Island Waters man was tended to by a bus driver and an off-duty police officer who rendered first aid until paramedics arrived.

Mr Wheeler was taken to Gold Coast University where he had remained in the intensive care unit up until his death on Saturday.

There was an outpouring of support and well wishes from the close-knit cycling community in the days that followed the shocking incident.

Cycling friend Steve Griffiths said the incident had left everyone involved ‘traumatised’.

“Dave will be sadly missed by all of us” Mr Griffiths told the Bulletin on Sunday.

Mr Wheeler was active in the local cycling community taking part in races and regularly attending social rides with the ‘Knights of Suburbia’ club on the Southern Gold Coast.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit.

A 53-year-old Carrara man and driver of the Jeep Cherokee was not injured during the crash.
