Police will allege a P-plater who drove on to the tram tracks and crashed into a busy Gold Coast station overnight blew more than three times the legal limit.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the silver Mercedes sedan was heading north on Surfers Paradise Boulevard about 1.30am on Wednesday when it veered on to the light-rail line.

The vehicle travelled a short distance before it slammed into a light pole at Cypress Ave station.

It’s alleged the driver, a 22-year-old man from Nerang, returned a roadside breath test reading of 0.179 – more than three times the legal limit.

He’s been charged with driving on a tramway and driving under the influence of liquor and will appear at Southport Magistrates Court on February 14.

The man was the only occupant of the vehicle which sustained significant damage.
