Shorten says NDIS underspend is making budget look good

“In McPherson, 1,044 people benefited, including 298 who had never received supports before, while 1,329 people with disability in the Fadden electorate benefited from the NDIS.”

He said the latter included 339 people who had never received government support.

“Nationally, more than 100,000 people who have never had support are now getting it through the NDIS, which is superb,” Mr Robert said.

“The NDIS is probably the biggest public service our nation has built — apart from Medicare — and it has been built very fast.

“There has been a rush to get people from state-based systems in to the NDIS. If people need support, they get it.”

The Fadden MP said the aim of the scheme was to help people with a disability identify how to reach their potential and live full lives.

“That’s the ideal,” he said.

“We still have to build the last 20 per cent of the NDIS design and rebuild Services Australia.

“The NDIS is an extraordinary national endeavour and it’s very complex.

“In 2015/16, the budget was $8.4 billion dollars. This will rise to $220 billion in the next 18 months,” he said.
