PLANNING and creating a custom cosplay costume can take fashion designer Jazmin Fuller anywhere from one month to one year, depending on the complexity.
The 27-year-old Upper Coomera local and applied fashion design and technology graduate has been fascinated by the world of cosplay since she made and wore her first outfit at Supernova in 2012.

Ms Fuller will join the thousands of other pop culture fans at the Gold Coast Superhero Weekend parade and Supernova this weekend in Broadbeach.
“I grew up playing video games with my dad and brother and reading about all the comic book heroes,” she said.
“Some of costumes I’ve made range from princess gowns to hero body suits.
“The most challenging was Ruby Rose from RWBY including her weapon Crescent Rose.

“I altered a few patterns to crate ruby’s outfit and my dad and myself designed a template for her weapon and cut everything out of wood.
“We assembled all the pieces to create the weapon and it was a challenge due to all the moving pieces on it.
“I really enjoy the creativity of the whole process.”
Ms Fuller tends to go towards strong female protagonists when choosing a character to replicate and said feminist role models were her inspiration.
“I feel very empowered and proud of my work and it’s always an amazing feeling when people recognise the character,” she said.
“People are kind in their comments and I appreciate the comments from people knowing the effort I put into the cosplay.
“Dad has helped me many times with designing and making many of my props.
“Mum is very proud of me and is always telling people about cosplay and the culture.”
Ms Fuller will be participating in the Superhero Parade in Broadbeach as part of
Australia’s only Gold Coast Superhero Weekend.
Joining her at Supernova will be Upper Coomera’s Robert Steele who is a dedicated Doctor Who fan who has been a follower of all things pop culture and gaming since he was three years old.

The 24-year-old has brought to life characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kylo Ren, The Joker (Jared Letos version), Robin from the Netflix Titans series, Spider-Man and Captain Rip Hunter from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
“The time it takes to plan and execute a look can vary depending on what is needed for the character like makeup, specific clothes, wigs, etc,” he said.
“The most challenging look so far has been Jared Leto’s joker as I spent a long time trying to perfect the makeup so it looked exactly like it does in Suicide Squad.
“When I do dress up as the various characters, I always get great enjoyment out of it and I even go as far as genuinely becoming that character.
“It also makes me so happy seeing little kids at the conventions get all excited when they see me roaming around as they’re favourite characters.”
The Gold Coast Superhero Weekend is a three-day program of events as part of the Supernova Supanova Comic Con and Gaming Expo, held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 8pm.
