IT has been called ‘rundown’ and ‘dilapidated’ by locals who say they are now avoiding Ashmore Plaza shopping centre centre in favour of the revamped Southport Park.
With vacant shops, a pot-holed car park and an old-fashioned fit out, locals are saying the centre is in desperate need of a makeover.
However, with two separate centre managements taking care of the centre, a lack of decision making has been blamed for the centre remaining relatively unchanged since the 80s.
Most recently, a badly damaged sign out the front has locals demanding the ‘unkempt eyesore’ to be removed.

Tim Ney, 48, a member of the online group Ashmore Resident & Community Group, lives on Cotlew Street and the sign needed to be removed as it made the suburb look ‘cheap’.
“In my opinion, the whole centre needs to be demolished and reconstructed towards the back left hand corner on the flat ground,” he said.
LACK OF PARKING AT MAJOR GOLD COAST SHOPPING CENTRE IS ABOUT TO GET WORSE
“The centre has a 15 per cent slope up the centre mall creating an uninviting challenge to the elderly.
“The centre comprises two centres, with a centre manager for each section. It’s difficult for them to make centre-wide decisions together. Hence why the sign, the carpark and general look of the centre has not changed since construction. ”
Donna Fraser, 47, a Molendinar local and business owner said she had been shopping there for 25 years and saw no changes in that time.
“It really needs a complete overhaul inside and out,” she said. “The sign has been damaged for a very long time and not repaired.
“Other buildings in our suburbs have had major renovations more than once in the last 25 years. ”
