Police suspect a knife was used in a savage attack which resulted in a man losing his life on a suburban street at Coffs Harbour.

Emergency services were called to Kurrajong Street following reports of an assault about 4.15am on Thursday.

Coffs/Clarence Police District officers found the 41-year-old man suffering critical upper body injuries.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man and he was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital, but later died.

It’s now emerged a witness walking on the street phoned emergency services for help.

The deceased man has since been identified by authorities, but not publicly named as police provide support to family and loved ones.

Coffs/Clarence District Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty said at a press conference in the afternoon it was believed the victim and the assailant knew each other.

Coffs/Clarence Police District Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty said detectives were gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses on Thursday afternoon.

Insp Flaherty described the attack as “tragic”, but said the incident was the reflection of the behaviour of individuals, not the area or the community as a whole.

“In general, the use of edged weapons can dramatically change the circumstances of an altercation and in this case a 41-year-old male lost his life as a result,” he said.

Insp Flaherty reminded the community “there are heavy fines for people that carry knives”.

Police did not advise of any arrests when contacted Friday morning.

Shortly before Insp Flaherty spoke out, neighbours in the street were rattled as forensics officers worked on Kurrajong St.

Some residents were seen crying on porches, while others tentatively milled about and interacted with police.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he heard “shouting” and “screaming” in the early hours – before he noticed a person run into a children’s park adjacent to a Kurrajong St house.

The man said he recently remarked to a friend he was glad Coffs Harbour did not have a crime problem like Melbourne.

“Now I can’t believe this has happened in my own street,” he said.

Another stunned long-time elderly resident exclaimed: “I’ve lived in this street 61 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.

“It’s a tragedy,” the woman said.

Coffs/Clarence detectives and a forensics team appeared to focus attention on a particular Kurrajong St residence.

Officers have launched an investigation under Strike Force Sandbach and inquiries were ongoing on Friday.

Police have urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
