A Coffs Harbour apprentice mechanic was “egged on” by his passengers as he attempted to fishtail his Honda Jazz and crashed the car on Boambee Beach.

The speeding car described as a “matchbox” by Magistrate Roger Prowse hit a patch of soft sand, lost a wheel, and rolled numerous times ending on its side on June 25.

The Honda was badly damaged, but the five people inside climbed free of the wreck.

The front seat passenger sustained a hairline fracture to the T3 vertebrae, was admitted to Coffs Harbour Hospital and released the next day.

Another passenger experienced “general soreness” and also went to hospital, according to Coffs Harbour Local Court documents.

The driver, Alexander Ellis Macmillan of Boambee, did not report the incident and later told police he did not realise he should have.

The 18-year-old faced the court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to reckless driving and not giving his particulars to police.

The documents state Macmillan was driving on the beach at about 80kmh before the crash.

He “started turning the steering wheel from side to side, in addition to applying the handbrake in an effort to make the rear of the vehicle lose control and fishtail”.

Macmillan’s lawyer, Scott James, told the court Macmillan now realised the potential consequences of his “moment of madness”.

Mr Prowse said Macmillan was “extraordinarily fortunate” that none of the passengers had sustained lasting injuries.

“You’re a quintessential young Aussie male – thick as two short planks,” Mr Prowse said.

On the reckless driving and failing to give particulars charges, Macmillan was convicted, fined $1800 and disqualified from driving for 27 months.
