After violent golf club assault, Shenoa Elizabeth Abbey requests bail again

A repeat bail breacher has made a new bid for freedom after allegedly attacking her neighbour at a housing commission block.

A woman with a history of breaching bail has asked to be released again, this time after allegedly hitting a woman in the head with a golf club.

Shenoa Elizabeth Abbey appeared via video link from jail where she was on remand for the assault charge which was laid while she was on parole.

Gympie Magistrates Court was told the alleged victim was the neighbour of Ms Abbey, who was living in social housing in Tin Can Bay at the time.

“There was a 4cm laceration to the head of the woman, a fracture on the right frontal bone and a minor head injury,” Police Prosecutor Melissa Campbell said.

Ms Abbey’s appearance at Gympie Court last year over justice perversion charges was mentioned in court.

In addition to the assault occasioning bodily harm charge, Ms Abbey’s extensive court history was mentioned, including an outstanding charge of attempt to pervert the course of justice and a “substantial criminal history including violence”.

Ms Abbey was at times emotional, and said “I’m gonna lose everything, this is setting me up for failure. If I can’t get out, I’ll lose everything … I don’t deserve this s***”.

At one point, Magistrate Bevan Hughes threatened to mute Ms Abbey if she continued to talk over the court.

The court heard Ms Abbey allegedly “forged” a letter claiming to be from her children in support of her own bail application on an unidentified charge, on an unknown date between August 22 and September 26, 2023.

The perversion of the course of justice charge, to which Ms Abbey has pleaded not guilty, was still to be dealt with in a higher court, Magistrate Hughes said.

Ms Abbey had already spent four and a half months in custody.

Sergeant Campbell argued Ms Abbey’s bail should be rejected, given her numerous breaches of bail previously.

“(The defendant) has shown the court she will continue to commit offences, and that she has no intentions of complying with bail conditions,” she said.

Magistrate Hughes told the court the Department of Housing had filed an urgent application to terminate her tenancy.

However, he granted Ms Abbey bail, and noted she had “gone almost twelve months without breaching bail.”
