A Sunshine Coast family has shared their heartbreak and devastation after a young man and innocent bystander was killed in a freak crash while working for council – just seven months before he was set to marry his soulmate.

The forensic crash unit is investigating following the fatal traffic crash in Mooloolaba on Friday, October 4.

Initial police investigations indicate about 11.35am, a ute towing a caravan was travelling north on Brisbane Road when it veered into oncoming traffic and struck five vehicles, including a parked car, which was pushed into the gardener.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said it was understood the male driver of the dual cab towing the caravan suffered a medical episode. He and his female passenger were taken to hospital in stable conditions.

Zachary David Wilson, 27, of Little Mountain, was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

He was later taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he died earlier on Monday, October 7.

His fiancee’s mother, Jody Milward, shared a heartfelt tribute to Facebook.

“Son to Mary and David, brother to Jed and Jess, soulmate to Lucy, son-in-love to Bruce and Jody, and brother-in-love to Sally and Charlie,” she said.

“Zachary has been tragically taken from those he loved and those who loved him.

“An innocent bystander on the footpath doing his work, when a ute towing a caravan went into the path of oncoming traffic, causing another vehicle to launch onto the footpath right where Zachary was at that time.

“He was struck and pinned down by one of the cars in the crash and has suffered severe head injuries.

“One of those freak, tragic accidents.”

Mrs Milward said words could not express how heartbroken they were.

“The world has lost a most excellent young man,” she said.

“Rather than planning a wedding, we are now planning a funeral.

“Instead of Lucy’s father walking her down the aisle, he pushed the hospital bed where his daughter and Zachary shared their last embrace, to the place where we would say goodbye.

“Our hearts have been ripped out.

“Zachary, we love you. We miss you.

“Our lives will never be the same without you.”

“The world just lost an incredible person, so full of life. Sending all my love and hugs to you all. I cannot imagine what Lucy and all of you are going through.”

“My heart is breaking reading this … this feels so incredibly harrowing, unfair and heavy to handle,” Jodi Tala said.

“My deepest condolences to your daughter, yourself and your families. Sending you guys all our love, strength, peace and healing energy and prayers.”

Earlier, Leigh Loane took to social media to pay tribute to the young man following his tragic death.

“Words cannot express the sadness,” she said.

“Life support was turned off and a family lost a beautiful son.

“Hug your loved ones.”
