Police are investigating a horror crash after a 27-year-old gardener working for council died in a freak incident when a car towing a caravan ploughed into several cars, causing a parked car to hit him.
The forensic crash unit is investigating following the fatal traffic crash in Mooloolaba on Friday, October 4.
Initial police investigations indicate about 11.35am, a utility towing a caravan was travelling north on Brisbane Road when it veered into oncoming traffic and struck five vehicles, including a parked car, which was pushed into the gardener.
The 27-year-old Little Mountain man was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
He was later transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he died earlier today, October 7.
Sunshine Coast forensic crash unit investigator Evan Condon said an initial investigation showed a car and caravan clipped two vehicles before hitting a third vehicle.
“Due to the impact, the vehicle has careered into the parked cars and the parked cars were pushed onto the gentleman working,” he said.
Leigh Loane took to social media to pay tribute to the young man following his tragic death.
“Words cannot express the sadness,” she said.
“Life support was turned off and a family lost a beautiful son.
“Hug your loved ones.”
Senior Constable Condon said the driver of the third vehicle, an 87-year-old Buderim man, remained in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said it was understood the male driver of the dual cab towing the caravan suffered a medical episode, with him and his female passenger taken to hospital in stable conditions.
A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokeswoman said they were notified of the incident at Mooloolaba and were making inquiries.
“WHSQ is not able to provide further comment at this time,” the spokeswoman said.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact police.
Investigations are ongoing.
