Man charged over multi-vehicle crash on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road

A 43-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after a massive crash left a car in flames, a caravan jammed against a bridge and the main road between Maryborough and Hervey Bay blocked for hours. Details and photos:

Police have charged a 43-year-old Urangan man over the three-vehicle crash on the Maryborough Hervey Bay Road at Susan River on Thursday which blocked the road for hours.

The crash, which happened about noon, involved multiple vehicles and a caravan.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd was closed for hours while crews investigated and recovered.

Police Media revealed on Friday afternoon that a man had been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving unlicensed, driving under the influence and “acts intended to maim”.

He was remanded in custody and faced the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Friday, October 11.

Diversions were in place on Thursday at Booral Rd roundabout and Churchill Mine Rd.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said four fire crews initially responded to the scene when one of the vehicles had caught fire; it was soon brought under control.

Two fire crews remained at the scene with both lanes for some time.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said one man who was experiencing neck pain was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital in stable condition.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
