Drew Cooper charged with attempted robbery, weapons and stealing offences in Casino

A man allegedly drew a blade and firearm on another man in the Northern Rivers in an attempt to steal his motorcycle before chasing him into a pub before leaving empty-handed.

Drew Cooper, 20, appeared before Magistrate Annette Sinclair in Casino Local Court on Thursday.

Cooper is charged with demanding property with menaces with intent to steal, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, and intimidation.

He is also facing charges of using a knife in public place and causing fear, having custody of a knife in public place, larceny, and contravening an apprehended violence order .

Police allege Cooper approached 22-year-old Isaac Anderson, who stopped at a carpark on Canterbury St, Casino about 10.15pm on March 12.

The court heard Cooper allegedly threatened Anderson with a knife and showed him what appeared to be a firearm before demanding his Kawasaki motorbike.

But Anderson fled with his keys while Cooper allegedly chased him into a nearby pub, the court heard.

A short time later Cooper left, empty-handed, and Anderson called police.

Police will allege Cooper attended another property in Casino later that night and stole $30 worth of prescription medication.

They will further allege that Cooper, between 12.01am and 3.30pm on March 17 at Casino, did knowingly contravene an AVO.

“Following extensive inquiries, a 20-year-old man was arrested on Lennox Street, Casino,” police said in a statement.

On March 18 police conducted a search at Cooper’s address, where they located and seized several items including a knife and toy firearm.

Cooper has not yet entered any pleas.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to reappear via audiovisual link in Casino Local Court on May 8.
