Third hazardous surf warning issued for Gold Coast this week

For the third day this week the Gold Coast’s beaches have been closed due to the wild conditions, with council even warning families to avoid walking along beaches.

DANGEROUS surf conditions have hit the Coast once again this week with swimmers and boaties told to avoid the water.

Beaches were opened along the protective corners early this morning, but Gold Coast City Council confirmed just after 9am that all beaches had been closed for the day.

The conditions are so extreme families have even been told to avoid walking near the water.

“Beachgoers are advised to avoid walking along the beach, especially with children as tidal surges are very strong and people may be swept off their feet,” a council spokeswoman said.

“The safest vantage points to view the surf are from dedicated pathways and oceanways.”

Earlier the Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning for parts of Queensland, including the Gold Coast.

The wild conditions are likely worsen in the afternoon.

The warning also includes tomorrow.

“This swell is coming from the east southeast direction, and is expected to continue on Friday and Saturday, beginning to ease during Sunday,” the warning read.

A strong wind warning was also issued for the Coast for today and tomorrow, as south-easterly winds reach 25 to 35km/h.

Surf Life Saving Queensland said people should consider staying out the water, while rock fishers and boaties should be extra cautious.

Gold Coast beaches were reopened to swimmers yesterday after closures earlier in the week, but they may not be long lived, with at least some expected to be closed by lifeguards later today.

Beach-goers are being urged to keep an eye on conditions and check with lifeguards before entering the water.
