A YouTuber at the centre of a wild run-in with Joel Parkinson – who told him to stop using a rain-soaked hill as a mudslide – claims the one-time world surfing champ backtracked on an agreement for “one more go”.
JJ Paton and his mate Steeze were being filmed sliding down a muddy Kirra Hill when they were approached by Parkinson, who told them “Get the f--- off. People have lost their houses”.
The intervention descended into a heated slanging match, captured on video, with a brief scuffle breaking out at one point.
Mr Paton told the Bulletin Parkinson was captured on camera agreeing to let the mates “have one more go” at sliding down the hill before they clashed.
Gold Coast City Council had blocked it off days before because of damage caused by recent rainfall and kids using it as a mud slide.
“We all came to an agreement that we would have one more go,” Mr Paton claims.
An extended video of the encounter was posted to YouTube showing a brief scuffle between Parkinson and the men, who complained their camera had been damaged.
Video of Parkinson sliding down the hill himself on a tarp days before the incident – and before it was blocked off by council – has since been uncovered.
Mr Paton said he was shocked to see the footage had gone viral, with the story making national headlines.
“We didn’t even know who it was at the start, we posted it then found out afterwards who it was,” the filmmaker said.
“It snowballed and went worldwide from there.”
It has since been revealed the damaged hill could cost ratepayers up to $10,000 to fix.
“We’re sorry about any damage caused but the majority of it was already there,” Mr Paton said.
“If we had the money, we would definitely help put in money to fix the hill.”
He had the following message for Parkinson: “What fuelled (you) to be so angry rather than speaking to us in a nicer way?
“The way he approached us wasn’t in a nice manner.”
Parkinson had earlier told the Bulletin: “They weren’t hurting anyone but I just thought it was disrespectful with everything the community was going through with the floods.
“I’d put up a slip ‘n’ slide up for the kids on the first day of the rain but these guys were adults, we’d had two days of sun, the hill reeked of mud and they’d climbed over a fence the council had put up.”
He said one of the group tried to provoke him by putting a camera in his face and “it ended up in the mud”.
The Surfers Paradise YouTuber, Mr Paton, who has previously worked with famous pranksters Shammi Prasad and Frenchy, said he planned to continue “making videos and having a fun time”.
“We just plan to travel around the world making the most fun videos we can,” Mr Paton said.
“We’re just going to be making music videos, blogging fun adventures and hopefully collaborating with other big YouTubers in the coming years.”
