Former surfer Joel Parkinson's confrontation over mudslide

Surfing icon and floods rescue hero Joel Parkinson has had a run-in with “disrespectful” thrillseekers using a Gold Coast mud hill as a slide, telling them “Get the f--- off. People have lost their houses”.

His intervention has descended into a very heated slanging match, captured on video, with what appears to be a brief scuffle breaking out at one point.

Neither Parkinson nor the other men are accused of any criminal wrongdoing.

Video posted to social media shows Parkinson telling the men to stop sliding down the hill, which the Gold Coast City Council had blocked off because of damage caused by recent rainfall.

“That’s enough. Hey you f---ing idiots. Get the f--- off. People have lost their houses,” he is heard saying on the video.

But the young men - who are filming it - argued back, with one responding: “Oh settle down mate.

“Don’t bring that (the floods) into it. This is not someone losing their house in the floods bro, so don’t do that.”

The young men don’t appear to let up, hitting back at the former world champ by saying: “We know c---- who have lost their houses in the floods. What are you talking about?”

An older man is then seen rushing in to support the group of mud sliders, screaming at Parkinson: “You’re trying to stop them having fun…we’ve had a gutful, have fun boys.”

A brief scuffle then appears to break out, with the young men then complaining their camera was damaged.

Parkinson told the Bulletin: “They weren’t hurting anyone but I just thought it was disrespectful with everything the community was going through with the floods.

“I’d put up a slip ‘n’ slide up for the kids on the first day of the rain but these

guys were adults, we’d had two days of sun, the hill reeked of mud and they’d

climbed over a fence the council had put up.”

“it ended up in the mud”.

The heavy downpour last week turned part of Kirra Hill into a muddy mess, with young people taking advantage of the conditions to use it as a mud slide.

But council was forced to block it off following complaints and will now have to spend significant ratepayer funds to repair the damage to the grass.

“Residents are a little bit upset by the third day, because it’s smelly and it’s actually quite a wide section of the hill now that’s just a muddy mess,” Cr Gail O’Neill said at the time.

“Our maintenance crew will go in there and assess it once it dries out.”

Meanwhile, all up it has been revealed the Gold Coast toll from flooding amounts to 1000 potholes, 69 damaged roads and 70 landslips. It will cost an estimated $10 million to fix.

A Gold Coast City Council army of 280 maintenance staff have been tasked with restoring parks, barbecues, roads and playgrounds.
