The men were not known to each other.

Police allege the 19-year-old was then punched in the head, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the pavement.

The alleged attacker fled the scene.

Paramedics, including the High Acuity Response Unit arrived on scene, where the victim was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition with serious head injuries.

The attack prompted a police manhunt, where patrolling officers tracked the man in the nearby vicinity.

He has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
