SKATER Sam Atkins walked away from Burleigh Brewing last night with a year’s supply of beer — but he doubts it will last him that long.
The 21-year-old travelled all the way from Geelong to compete in the inaugural Burleigh Keg Jump, an event which challenged skaters to ollie over as many kegs as they could.
Sam, who started skating when he was just nine years old, made it over 11 kegs.
As the first ever winner he takes home $1000, 24 slabs of beer and a custom-made “Golden Growler” trophy.
“I don’t think (the beer) will last a year, I’ll have a pretty big party when we get home,” he said.
“There was no practising, it was just one at a time and even if you think you can’t make it you just add another one. There were a few stacks but that’s fine.
“It’s one of the coolest trophies I’ve ever seen, it’s a huge barrel we’ve filled with beer and we’ll display it at home on the mantelpiece.
“I’ve got a lot of friends that live up in Queensland so it was a bit of an excuse to catch up with everyone and sounded like a fun time. I’ll definitely be back if they do it next year.”
Sam was one of 20 other skaters competing in the Keg Jump, which was judged by Slam Magazine editor Trent Fahey and The Skateboarder’s Journal editor Sean Holland.

The event is part of a month-long celebration of skating arranged by the brewery, who last month told the Bulletin they wanted to showcase up and coming talent.
“For that reason we do things with music, with comedy, with cinema, with art, it gives us a way to celebrate the different passions in the community,” CEO Peta Fielding said at the time.

“It’s about giving people a shot. We know how hard it was to do something we really believed in and wanted to share with people. Now we’ve got a platform.
“It gives a little spotlight to rural skateboarding and to the crazy talent in what some of these people do.”
The celebrations will finish up on June 27 with a screening of new film “Skate Kitchen” at the Burleigh Outdoor Cinema.
