A FLIGHT out of Gold Coast airport has been forced to divert to Sydney following an incident on board.

Scoot Flight TR7, heading from the Gold Coast to Singapore, only made it one hour and 20 minutes into its journey before an unruly passenger caused staff to turn it around.

It is understood the Australian male passenger had to be physically restrained on board after reportedly “self-harming” on the plane.

It is not known what triggered the incident.

Australian Federal Police officers and a NSW ambulance crew were dispatched to meet the plane when it landed in Sydney at about 4.30pm Gold Coast time.

A Scoot spokeswoman said the decision to divert to Sydney rather than return to the Gold Coast was to lessen the disturbance for other passengers.

“It’s a bigger airport, they have bigger handling facilities because they were trying to get everyone off the plane quickly,” she said.

“They were sent to Sydney just to make everything faster for the passengers.”

Arrangements were made for all passengers to take different flights either with Scoot or with Singapore Airlines later in the evening.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed inquiries into the incident were ongoing but no charges had been laid.
