Police arrest man, woman after Burleigh Waters bank robbery

Police have taken a man and woman into custody after a bank robbery on the Gold Coast.

A MAN and woman have been arrested after an armed robbery at a Burleigh Waters bank earlier this week.

A 22-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, both from Southport, were taken into custody in Broadbeach this morning and have now been charged.

The man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery, possessing dangerous drugs (methylamphetamine) and possessing utensils or pipes that have been used.

The woman has been charged with one count of armed robbery.

It comes after a pair of leather-clad armed robbers wearing motorbike helmets held up a Suncorp bank at Stocklands Burleigh Waters around 3pm Wednesday afternoon.

A man and woman stormed the bank as the man approached the teller, pulled out a black handgun and demanded cash. The woman stood off to the side and kept a look out.

Police did not confirm the amount of cash stolen however it is thought to be in the thousands, and the pair then fled to the shopping centre car park.

They were briefly chased by customers and clashed briefly with alleged boss of the Gold Coast chapter of the Hells Angels Greg Pearce.

Pearce followed and confronted the pair after they pointed a gun in his face immediately after leaving the bank.

His lawyer Adam Magill, of Lawler Magill Lawlers, told the Bulletin Pearce had yelled for them to stop.

CUSTOMER CHASES AFTER BANK ROBBERS

“He was out at the shops and they were coming from the bank into the car park, where the bikes were parked and they’ve levelled the gun at him,” he said.

“He dared him to shoot him, and they’ve run off and jumped on the one bike.

“He said to me, ‘Nobody does a robbery in my area, with my family and kids around, no one’.”

The robbers left on a black motorbike with a yellow learner’s plate along Burleigh Connection Rd.

Detective Inspector Chris Tritton said in a press conference on Friday he believed they may have run out of fuel not long after the heist.

“We have new information they may have travelled along Dunlin Dr, Burleigh Waters,” he said.

“They may have been pushing the motorcycle, so we really rely on the public, in particular any dashcam or CCTV that may have captured them.”

The motorbike was later found near Dunlin Dr and Christine Ave.
