It is understood the man and woman stormed the bank about 3pm yesterday, wearing dark leather jackets, dark clothing and full-face helmets.

The male walked up to the bank teller, pulled out a black handgun and demanded cash.

The woman stood off to one side and kept a look out.

It is understood the teller handed over an unknown sum of cash, thought to be in the thousands, before the pair ran to the shopping centre car park.

The last reported bank robbery on the Gold Coast happened at a Coolangatta Suncorp in January 2014, when 45-year-old Russell James Manser terrorised bank tellers with an iron bar, before stealing $9020.

In similar circumstances, an employee of Big Chief burger ran from the shop and confronted the man, after a customer followed Manser out of the bank saying he had just robbed the place.

The burger shop employee tackled him to the ground and sat on him in the Chalk St carpark until police arrived on scene.

He was sentenced in February 2015 to four years in prison.
