One of the southern Gold Coast’s most popular eateries is bringing a beloved Japanese festival to the city with bao buns, cocktails and “all things pink”.

The Collective venue manager Stewart Mackay said he was excited to transform the Palm Beach venue’s rooftop in honour of Japan’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

The eight-week celebration will kick off on April 2, with diners able to choose from an Umami Asian menu featuring chicken karaage, Osaka-style okonomiyaki, bao buns and dumplings.

“I love travelling, but with the current (cost of living crisis) climate not allowing people to travel to far away places, I thought why not bring the festival to Palm Beach?” Mr Mackay said.

Palm Beach residents and The Collective’s owners were thrown off guard in 2021 when plans were released for a 25-storey development that would see the beloved eatery demolished.

Almost 2000 residents objected to the tower and about 15 locals used their own money for campaign costs to fight against the project.

Gold Coast City Council knocked back initial plans, but in July last year developers S & S Projects launched an appeal, reducing the building height to 20 storeys.

Mr Mackay said they had not received any updates on the site’s proposed redevelopment.

“We are in the same position as the general public in terms of information,” he said.

“Our focus remains solely on providing the best service to our patrons and continuing to be a part of the Palm Beach community for as long as possible.

“Our perspective has always been one of understanding and respect for the community’s feelings and we have genuine hope for a resolution that serves the best interests of both the residents of Palm Beach and the developers.”
