Men airlifted to Gold Coast hospital following jetski accident, hours long search

Two men who were stuck in “freezing” Gold Coast waters for hours following a jetski accident were rescued by helicopter.

A JETSKI accident on the Gold Coast left two men in the water for hours waiting to be rescued.

The men, who are both in their 20s, required a helicopter rescue just off the Jacobs Well area late Saturday night following their jetski being caught in mangroves.

Both men were airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital and suffered hypothermia with one in a critical condition and the other stable.

Queensland Emergency Services said the rescue helicopter was called out at 6.33pm.

Family also contacted the Jacobs Well Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) just after 7.30pm.

A spokesperson from Jacobs Well VMR said the rescue team were unable to access the men by boat.

“It was getting dark when we started the search for the men and it was freezing,” he said.

“By the time we found them we were relying on moonlight and the men were about 800 metres from the closest entry.

“It was obvious they were suffering hypothermia.

“We couldn’t get the boat to them because of the mud but were talking to them and telling them to stay put.”

The men were finally pulled from the water at about 9pm and the Jacobs Well VMR spokesperson said the team returned to base at 10.30pm following the rescue.
